How long will it take and how much will it cost to build an ECommerce website?

Entrepreneur asked:

I’ve been thinking about hiring a contractor from odesk.com, or someone simiar. I was also thinking about getting a merchant account through charge.com. It really doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but should be sucure for processing payments and incorporate flash. How many hours should I be looking at with this thing and what should it cost me? What will be the neccessary skills that I need to look for and will a rate range of $15-$25 per hour be OK for a good quality person? Thanks in advance for any responses.

It’s a really easy job. Maybe 5 hours at about $10 an hour. Hire some Indians cuz they’re cheap.

It depends on the complexity of the ecommerce you’re looking to build. Flash is nice, although I wouldn’t recommend it if it comes to ecommerce website since user-friendly, easy-ordering system is better for potiential customers.

Skills you should look for is Web designing, programming included but not limited to PHP, HTML, CSS, MySQL, Apache, Lunix, FTP, Payment Gateway Integration, Photoshop, …

Average cost is about $500. If you prefer a lower rate, you should consider a web template which will save time & money.

Whatever you do, don’t always go with the cheapest. Look for a quality developer to build your eCommerce site. We always have people coming to us saying that the ‘cheap’ option they took was a disaster and that they need it build properly.

Why not have a look at something like business catalyst (http://businesscatalyst.com) and have someone make a good looking design for you. All set up and ready to go, just add a design…

Quote from a customer on their site ““We approached Digital Parsnip to re-design our online furniture shop. We’ve seen a 40% increase in sales as a result!”

Be careful who you use for credit card processing because you will find what you were told is not what you will pay. the industry is full of hidden fees and surcharges. That’s why most companies try to lock you in to a 3yr contract. Stay clear of contracts and set up fees.
